We were treated to the most amazing show last night at Achnagairn – for a good hour, we watched the Northern Lights dance over the Achnagairn Lodges, as the sky was lit up in green, with an amazing starry backdrop. What an evening; what Inverness sights!
Unfortunately, our phones were not quite up to the task of capturing the amazing colours of the sky, but we turned off the lights across the estate so that the Aurora Borealis was the only light you could see. Look one way, and all was black with a blanket of stars; look the other, and instead you could see an eerie green with strips of light spilling through from up above.
Although our phones only showed the darkness, other people across the UK have captured the most beautiful images of the lights. It seems that they could even be seen as far south as Oxfordshire, and we have given you a few photos here sourced from this article to show off how amazing they really looked. We experienced all the different shades of greens, but these pinks and oranges are absolutely incredible.
We have been to Sweden in search of this amazing phenomenon before – who’d have thought that we would actually experience it much better right on our doorstep – as one of the Inverness sights the Highlands have to offer! What an amazing chance to be able to step just outside our lodge, sit on the lawn all wrapped up, and experience these kinds of sights!
They say the conditions that led to it – the cold, clear night and the electrically-charged particles of the sun could be recreated again tonight, so will be keeping an eye out again this evening in Inverness. We will let you know if our phones capture anything better this time…
