The Highlands is full of mystery, beauty and nature, but one thing you probably didn’t know it was good for, is throwing a killer festival. With all the wonder and nature at your disposal, there is the perfect setting for a festival right at our disposal here in the highlands. With such wonderful Highland festivals dominating 2016, it would seem Inverness is quite simply, the place to be.
The Great Tapestry of Scotland tells the history of Scotland, from its formation, through major events in the nation’s past, to modern times in over 160 stitched panels. Thousands of community volunteers from around Scotland came together to create the tapestry, making it Scotland’s largest ever community project. This goes on display at the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery throughout February, a perfect family day out. This low key event is one of the Highland Festivals that both combines culture and art in a quiet, educational family day out.
A more popular choice of the Highland festivals is for the whisky connoisseurs amongst us, The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. During the festival, whisky connoisseurs will be able to tour and taste an incredible array of fine single malts from a number of the Speyside Distilleries. Events kick off on 28 April 2016 with a Whisky Nosing and Tasting featuring Whiskies of the Speyside Line and is followed by the Mates of the Whisky Museum Spring Gathering. The Whisky Fair will be the highlight of the Highlands.
Founded in 1822 the Inverness Highland Games is one of the most spectacular traditional gatherings staged in Scotland and is one of the highlights of any visit to the Highland capital city of Inverness. With piping and traditional food on offer, there is lots for the whole family to enjoy whilst watching these spectacular contests at one of our most traditional and aged Highland festivals. From junior athletes competing to the ever popular Male event of the Scots Hammer, the Highlands Games is set to make for a truly memorable day out.
