The Scottish Highlands are renowned for their colourful history and culture. From the battle of Culloden to the massacre of Glen Coe, the Highlands are not short of a tale or two to tell. If you’re planning a trip to Inverness, then a visit to the local historic sites is a must! With so many fantastic attractions on offer, it can be hard to know where to begin. We round up some of the best castles near Inverness.

Cawdor Castle

Situated approximately ten miles from the city centre of Inverness, Cawdor Castle is a magnificent example of medieval architecture. The actual age of the castle is unknown, however research points to the first records being documented in 1554.

The castle boasts five trail walks of varying lengths and difficulties. Many of the trails begin in the castle’s stunning Flower Garden, with the exception of the last which begins at the Blue Bridge. The trails are strategically laid out to be flexible, meaning you can swap from one walk to the other.

The castle has a plenitude of gardens to be explored including a walled garden, located on the north-east side of the building. This garden was previously used as an orchard in 1635, but from the 1960’s onwards had adapted to grow herbs and seeds.

Perhaps one of the most gorgeous gardens of all is the Wild Garden. Created in the 1960’s, this garden is far from the formal landscaping associated with castles and features a plethora of wild plant life. From azaleas to bamboo as well as other rare species, it’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind.

Dunrobin Castle

Built in 1845, Dunrobin Castle has acted as home for many Dukes and Earls of Sutherland across the centuries. The castle is currently owned by Lord Strathnaver and is a fine example of Scottish history. The castle itself makes for a brilliant day out with the family, with the grounds hosting a museum, as well as falconry demonstrations – perfect for bird watching enthusiasts!

Dunrobin Castle also features some truly gorgeous formal grounds. The gardens themselves were created in 1850 by an architect known as Sir Charles Barry. Sir Barry was also responsible for the creation of the Victorian extension to the castle. However, visitors to the centre may perhaps know Sir Barry by his lifetime work of art – the Houses of Parliament.

Of course, any trip to the Scottish Highlands would be incomplete without a visit to Perfect Manors’ very own Achnagairn Castle.
