Things to do on holidays in Inverness – Highlanders MuseumA painting of The Battle of Waterloo

Do you enjoy learning about history and indulging in some culture? If so and you are planning any holidays in Inverness then The Highlanders Museum is certainly worth a visit. Situated in Fort George on a historical site in the former Lieutenants Governors’ House the collection covers three floors displaying oodles of Scottish history.

After the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion Fort George was used to guard the approaches to Inverness and is a ‘registered as a historic monument’. The British Army continues to use this site to house its Regular Infantry Battalion.

So what will you see on your visit…

There are over 20,000 artefacts on display and an estimated 10,000 documents and photographs for you to explore. It is probably the largest regimental display outwith the city of London. Here you can see medals, ‘death pennies’ (WW1 memorial plaques), uniforms, pictures, paintings, instruments, a set of Colours carried at the Battle of Waterloo, King Edwards VIII’s regimental uniform and much, much more.

You can browse through the superb libraries archive of diaries, letters, books and magazines, submerging yourself in history and the mind set of those who created it. You can learn stories about the real life characters that made this museum possible such as Piper Kenneth Mackay who in the battle of Waterloo in 1815 famously ignored the enemy and piped the 79th Cameron Highlanders into battle to an ultimate victory.

There is a shop in the museum where you can purchase many regimental items, books, whisky, clothing and many other items that you can take away with you as a keepsake and memory of your day.

Perfect for the kids…

It is a great place for the kids where they can indulge their curious and enquiring minds and let them run wild with exciting stories of battles and war and interesting artefacts. It is a great place of learning for all ages and makes for a fabulous day out for all.
