HIGHLAND RETREATS – PERFECT MANORS
Set in the stunning Highlands of Scotland lays the grand estate of Achnagairn. With history dating back as far as the 17th century, the estate has been witness to many tales of triumph and glory. Now, renovated into a five star resort, the Achnagairn Estate plays home to its very own castle and lavish luxury lodges. The ideal location for highland retreats, a trip to Achnagairn Estate is a true escape from the ordinary.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF ACHNAGAIRN ESTATE
A place steeped in history, there has been a residence on the site since at least 1663, and the castle, as it now stands, since around 1812. A crest emblazoned on the outside wall announcing: “Pace Et Bello Paratus,” Latin for “Peaceful, but prepared for battle,” a stirring reminder of the ancient origins of the place. The word “Achnagairn” itself means “Field of Cairns,” a pretty contrast with the bold crest. In 1901 the house was bought by the Ogden family of Liverpool and, during World War II, was used as a hospital for injured soldiers. Over the last decade, the house was to change owners many times; thankfully surviving attempts to turn it into flats, but sadly was to later fall into disrepair. Since moving into the possession of current owners, Gillian and Michael Lacey-Solymar, the estate has been restored to its former glory and in 2008 was opened for business.
